Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre

On the way along the Sea to Sky Highway, you will have notice bilingual (First Nations and English) signage for some features, such as the names of rivers and creeks that run beside the road. This reflects the strong First Nations culture of both the Squamish Nation and the Lil’wat Nation, who have inhabited this region for millennia. An excellent place to learn more is at the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre 5 [map] (4584 Blackcomb Way; Tue–Sun 10am–5pm) on the edge of Whistler. Inside a stunning modern building, designed to reflect the two nations’ traditional buildings, exhibits, performances, and storytelling portray their cultures and traditions. There are some fine examples of art and wood-carving, and members of the tribes give guided tours explaining the symbolism of the art and legends. Don’t miss the Thunderbird Café, see 4 [map], on the lower level.

The Sea to Sky Highway doesn’t end at Whistler, but carries on as far as Pemberton, beyond which Highway 99 changes name several times before it ends at Highway 97, just north of the latter’s intersection with the TransCanada Highway.
